Discipline!

Ok, so I'm really going to try to just play cash games and see my results...
I've decided I will stop for 3 reasons.
1. Time commitment
2. Win $75 at table - 3X buyin
3. Lose $50 at table - 2X buyin

I started with just one table, while updating comments/reading blogs, etc..

Welcome Andy

Like the 4th hand in this came up...which I think is a great hand for discussion, my thoughts at the end are provided

I minibet the turn on purpose, really hoping that he had 2 pair or KQ for a straight. I minibet so that if he had a good hand, his check raise wouldn't pot commit me to going all in on the draw, and it worked perfectly. Once the flush hit on the river, I knew I'd take his whole stack. I paused and hit the time button on purpose, instead of pushing quickly with the flush, and again it worked.

I know some people like to check the turn with the draw to see a free river, but I think you're playing too obviously then. If I checked the turn, he would have checked the river, and I would only been able to win a small pot.
Here's a funny hand...I pressed the call button on the turn by accident...lol

kenny! wow... u run goot =)
why did u decide to stop when you win 3x the buy in? is this to decrease exposure to variance?

anyway thanks for posting hand #1. do you take this line often with your draws? one pattern i've noticed is that a minbet on the flop almost ALWAYS means some type of draw, so i almost always raise huge with any pair. do you run into this problem often or does your strategy work in general? also, awesome turn analysis. you're getting 4.5:1 implied odds if you are sure u can stack him. nice play.

on hand 3. did you have a read on the player being loose or is this play pretty standard? i never play on pstars so i dunno how loose the games usually are. in general, is it a good strategy to just call pre flop? i imagine you'll be 50/50most of the time, so just calling decreases variance and allows you to save your chips and outplay ppl in other hands. or do ppl call with smaller aces often enough to make this profitable? for what it's worth, i think i play the hand the same as you. just wanted an opinion.

yo wen...i decided to set up some type of disciplined structure with my play mainly because of a couple reasons
1. I work 60 hrs. a week at work, so I honestly don't have that much time to play. =D

2. I want to see if I have the discipline to stay with a strategy, where my end goal is ultimately to consistently build my roll to go to vegas...ie the title of the blog

3. i figured 3x by buyin at $25 comes out to $100, just thought it was good and realistic stopping point. If i set it at 4x or 5x, there might be nights i play too long trying to get there

on hand #1, like almost any poker answer, it all depends on the variables and most importantly some innate feeling i get...lol
so the simple answer is not always, but I think alot has to do with the sense I get if he he's weak or not. If I sense weaknesses, I'll just bet strong and push him out, but if I sense strength, depending on stack sizes I'll minibet or check.

It also depends if I have a pair or straight draw with it, ie. the 6s8s hand from a couple nights ago, where I bet big on the turn.

You know its funny that you mentioned that you feel like when people minibet, it's always some type of draw. I agree with you, which is why at times when I flop monsters, i minibet on purpose, to give off that impression. Hopefully in the upcoming days I'll have a hand like that come up

on hand #3, again no I don't always play my AK that way. One huge variable that I remember specifically looking at was his chip stack. I had double his stack, so I felt I was ready to gamble with him. But again it all depends on chip sizes, position, the way the player has been playing etc. To be honest I think I call more often than raise to hide the strength of my hand, plus AK is overrated. =)

I like the mini bet to make the pot odds small b/c with monster flops peoples like to check it down for a "trap" I was surprised about the turn call but I guess you said it was an accident.
